Senators shown inland rail alternative

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson is expected to question the Federal Government’s plans to have an inland rail freight network bypass some of the largest food producing areas in the region.

Senator Hanson and fellow One Nation Senators Brian Burston and Malcolm Roberts were in Tocumwal last week to learn more about the proposed freight network.

Berrigan Shire Council general manager Rowan Perkins said while the senators did not know a lot about the project when they arrived, he said they recognised some flaws in the government’s inland rail plans after speaking with local stakeholders.

‘‘When they learned of the freight numbers on our proposed alternative route, they were gobsmacked,’’ Mr Perkins said.

‘‘The Federal Government is proposing a route through Albury, Wagga Wagga and then to Parkes, whereas we feel it should go through Shepparton, Tocumwal and Narrandera before going to Parkes.
